The Gambia’s media fraternity is in mourning with the passing away of veteran journalist, Kebba Dibba, who died at 51 following a brief illness.Dibba, a Cardiff University trained journalist, until his death was the Director of TV Programmes at The Gambia Radio and Television Services. His career in journalism spanned over two decades and had in the past served as the Director General of the State broadcaster and the Editor-in-Chief of the Daily Observer newspaper among many portfolios held during his career.

Kebba was one of the most significant and influential voices in Gambian journalism, especially the broadcast media and had served as a mentor for many up and coming youngsters who have gone on to build great careers in the profession.

About Kebba Dibba

Born in Sintet village, Foni Jarrol, West Coast Region (WCR), Dibba’s career in journalism began in 1992 when he joined the Film Production Unit of the then Department of Information and Broadcasting. He later worked with GRTS from the inception of the TV.

Dibba obtained a Higher Diploma in Journalism at the Ghana Institute of Journalism in 1998. In 2007, he also obtained a Master’s Degree in International Journalism at the School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies at Cardiff University, United Kingdom. He also served as the editor-in-chief of the Daily Observer Newspaper between 2000 and 2001.

Shortly after his demise, Gambians took to social media to express their shock and disbelieve. “I learnt with a great shock and Disbelief the passing of a veteran Gambian journalist and television icon, Kebba Dibba. For a minute I was froze about his untimely demise for he was a great asset who left an indelible mark in the country’s broadcast media,’’ Hatab Fadera wrote on Facebook.

Modou Lamin Jammeh of the Daily Observer newspaper said; “It’s so sad that veteran journalist Uncle Kebba Dibba is gone!! His untimely demise is indeed a huge loss to the media fraternity of The Gambia. You are gone but shall always be remembered. Rest in Perfect Peace Legend! Amen.”

For Isatou Bajen Sarr, she finds it hard to believe that Kebba is gone. ‘’I used this medium to express my heartfelt condolence to his family and the entire management and staff of GRTS,’’ she wrote on Facebook.

“He was a kind soul, a mentor to many Gambian journalists including myself. Thanks Uncle Kebba for your immense contribution to my career especially during my weekly ‘Market Link’ TV Show on GRTS. Your words of wisdom and encouragement have impacted a lot on my career,’’ Nyima Jadama, another mentee of the late Kebba Dibba wrote.
